Valley of the Lost Tribes

My friend Wicki from Kauai visited us today. She got me thinking about our wonderful trip this year to the island that I most love, Kauai. This shot is pretty soft and sort of has an old postcard, Martin's Dyes feel. Thank you so much Wicki for your friendship and support.

This picture is of Kalalau. The Valley of the Lost Tribe is the valley just west of Kalalau, with the large natural rock archway right on the beach. It's known as Honopu.
The Na Pali Coast is one of the most beautiful places on our planet. JH

Admittedly I haven't camped back there for about twenty five years but my foggy memory was that it could be reached by walking back in the Kalalau and turning right and walking south. In any case, no intent to deceive, the general direction of the Valley, if I may...

Besides, Valley of the Lost Tribes has such a cool sound to it!

No worries man. I'm just sharing what an old local friend of mine told me. You're right there is a trail head that goes into Honopu from up on that ridge in Kokee State Park near Awaawapuhi. I was there in 1978, and my friend BJ was showing me around. We had a base camp under the archway with a small group of friends. You have to climb up the cliff of a cinder cone to get into the valley of Honopu from the ocean side. Back in the valley proper there are some caves that were used by the ancient Hawaiians as burial grounds, and several archaeological sites. BJ explained that modern Hawaiians called it the Valley of the Lost Tribe because of those sites, as I recall. He has a property down on the beach near Tunnels in Haena, right next to where the Taylor Camp used to be. When I saw him in '77 & '78 he was living in a tent. By '86, he had built a really nice tree house on the lot. Classic guy from Venice Beach originally, who could roll a doobie with one hand while driving a car. A lost art.
Thanks for sharing. Brought back some memories from long ago. JH

Thank you. You sound better acquainted than I am. I took the boat up this fall and got to see it from the other side. The large x denoting Pele on the cliffs.

My memories are waterfall shampoos, kalalau tom having birds land on his hand like Doctor Doolittle or St. Francis, Ronnie and I cutting bamboo for digeredoos and playing for a long stretch of time in an absolutely dark cave. Goats falling off the cliff into our stew pot. goat gravy charlie and the woman who swam in every year into her seventies. Bonnie and Michael from Barefoot. Amazing times.

I remember the gal that used to swim in from the end of the road. She was blond when I saw her. Into her seventies, wow, truly amazing times.
We'll have to talk about this more when we have lunch. Got a story to tell about a midnight zodiac boat ride to the Na Pali in the middle of lightning storm. It had me questioning my sanity and my choice of friends. Jer
