Great story about meeting the man in the dark house. Could be the beginning of a great short story: Maltese Falcon comes to mind. Why not spin it out into a dark plot: it has all the elements you need, just make it what you will, take the step to the other side, buy the locket and begin to unravel the broken man and his "vocation."
