The Bored Samurai

Having a long background in martial arts, I love to geek out on samurai movies.

Have binged Lone Wolf and Cub, Zatoichi and Hanzo the Razor.

The Japanese genre is called Chambara or "Sword fighting" movies.

I found a new series recently on YouTube, The Bored Samurai, from 1973.

Saotome Mondonuske is hatamoto to the Tsunayoshi Shogun.

He bears a crescent shaped scar on his forehead that tingles when he senses trouble and signifies that he has the Shogun's permission to cut people to pieces.

Guy rips through twenty or thirty antagonists at a time, with very little blood shown.

Pretty much the same plot every time, evildoers trying to overthrow the Shogun and damsels fall in love with Saotome left and right.

Great acting for this sort of thing. The lead is played by the excellent Utaemon Ichikawa. His faithful servant Kinai is also a hoot.

If you are a real nasty person, our protagonist will unleash his dual frontal blade assault on you. Believe me, you do not want that to happen.

Oddly, it looks like their is a stand in for the lead in episode seven that is never explained and ddidn't feel quite right. Still, a nice quick binge.
