Deep fakes and the first amendment

Since we are on the topic, there was an interesting article published recently by Ali Swenson, FEC moves toward potentially regulating AI deepfakes in campaign ads

Apparently AI fabrications are becoming more and more common in the political sphere and I think that it is a frightening development. Take these two egregious examples:

The Republican National Committee in April released an entirely AI-generated ad meant to show the future of the United States if President Joe Biden is reelected. It employed fake but realistic photos showing boarded-up storefronts, armored military patrols in the streets, and waves of immigrants creating panic.

In June, DeSantis’ campaign shared an attack ad against his GOP primary opponent Donald Trump that used AI-generated images of the former president hugging infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.

We live in  a world where people are already trapped by outlandish conspiracy theories and lunacy. People literally do not know what to believe anymore. To permit this sort of fraudulent deception in political campaigns under the guise of free speech will only exponentially worsen the problem.

Personally, I think it is criminal. Satire is one thing, deliberate attempts to confuse and mislead another.
