Pinnell Gallery Show

A few people asked me to post the winning entrants that I chose for the Pinnell Gallery small painting show that I judged last week. There was a lot of very nice work and it was hard to make a decision but these paintings are the ones that ultimately made the grade.

The first painting is by William Gullette and took the blue ribbon at the exhibition. It is titled "Out at the point." It did not photograph optimally but is striking in person and notable for its strong and confident brushwork. I really like this talented artist's loose yet descriptive approach.

My second place winner was "The Dancer" by Carlsbad's Rita Pacheco. All three of her submissions were outstanding and it was hard to make a decision but I felt that this painting was the strongest compositionally. Rita has an excellent sensitivity for values and shows nice brushwork here.

The third place award went to Chick Curtis, an outstanding artist who is what I would call a modern day tonalist. Chick's work always knocks me out. This painting is called "Mooo-ve over."

These are my three honorable mentions, Janie Kent's "Dreamy Afternoon," Brian Bateman's "Spitfire Dawn" and Vicki Gammell's pastel "Waiting to ripen." All three wonderful and competent works.

I had a wonderful time judging and hope that I get a chance to do it again. I would like to thank Rich Stergulz for giving me the opportunity.
