Those Pathetic Padres

As a Padre fan since inception, the depths that this club has plunged have thrown me into a funk. Who would have thought that John Moores could have us looking back fondly for the good old days of Tom Werner and the Fire Sale?

No pitching, usually the strength of the club, no power hitting, no middle infield, a gimpy and old Giles, this club really stinks. The only skill they seem to have mastered is striking out. A completely raided and depleted farm system. A field so large that it sucks the testosterone right out of every promising player.

I like Gonzales, Kous and Hairston and what else? They got nothing for Khalil, and I think his play suffered when he just couldn't take playing for such a loser any more. The shame of it all is that they were so close two years ago. This club has always jettisoned good players like Derrick Lee and Loretta in their prime. God, we miss Joan Kroc.

This team, put together by that nebish Sandy Alderson, has no strengths whatsoever. His infield pitching prodigy, Matt Bush, was just arrested on assault charges. Antonelli is a total loser. The whole team is just a called third strike waiting to happen. The only visible strategy they have had is trade their great pitching for nothing so that John Moores can pay off his soon to be ex wife Becky. Never could understand how the guy could be the only one in his company to escape indictment but guess that is what happens when you got the gelt.

Things seemed to be in a lot better shape when Towers ran the club. He could play poker with the other GM's and always seemed to come up with hidden gems. Alderson is more like working for some erudite ivy league lawyer George Will type who's never got his hands dirty.

I hope that new owner Moorad can clean house but also give Towers the benefit of the doubt, it really wasn't his fault - what a disgrace that with all the revenue John Moores and JMI made on the club and real estate holdings and they couldn't put a decent team on the field. Let's hope Moorad isn't another carpetbagging charlatan on a quest for swag.

I go back to Gaston and McCovey, Ollie Brown, Gaylord Perry, Tempy, Gwynn, Vaughn. We have had quality baseball in San Diego. This year we are looking up from the cellar once again. Another reason to hate Texas.
