I got up at six and drove up to the San Jacinto Wildlife Area to bird. I needed to kill three hours time before I was to meet with a client at a Chevron station on Ramona Expressway to buy a rug.
I was blown away to see that the recent fire burned right up to the wildlife area. I haven't processed my shots yet but want to tell you that birds were scarce, the picking were slim. Perhaps the fire scared them away?
In any case, it was a nice place to chill, I got a nice short hike in that my body really needed before the rain came down.
I wanted to hear a certain John Prine song and I dialed in a new Nanci Griffith station on Pandora. For some reason it dialed up a roster of some of the saddest songs ever, from Eva Cassidy to James Taylor and I had a bit of an emotional burst. I have a lot on my plate right now. Started thinking about both of my late brothers and lost it. Too much shit coming down.
I met the folks with the rug. So interesting!
A pictorial hooked rug dated 1888 with everything but the kitchen sink pictured and maybe there is one of those too! I have never seen anything like it.
It has a little damage but not too much. These things were selling for a lot of money in Texas but I think I will contact an East Coast folk art auction house and see what it will bring. Probably Pennsylvania or Ohio I would think but who knows? It came from a family estate in Redlands.
Almost a crazy quilt motif. Unusual to find one with a date. My mom would have loved it back in the Poconos.
I got home in the rain and made a chicken soup from scratch with the carcass from the other night. Added a lot of carrots, garlic and ginger. It is the third incarnation after chicken salad. Should be cooked down in another half hour or so.
Should be good.
