Oh I like this - had only heard the version by the Brooklyn Funk Essentials before now. That yodelling thing I've only ever heard on recordings by the jazz funk band OPA. Is there any connection? Sounds like the same voice.

Not sure on your question. This is the original from 1969 with Leon Thomas singing and I think he did his own version as well. Of course this is only a third section of the side. One of my favorites from the era, along with Roland Kirk's Volunteered Slavery. Try to check that out as well. Ta.

love Pharoah, such a big beautiful messy sound on tenor, with all those percussive colors thrown in; the rhythm and the melody holds it all together though, otherwise it would fly off into deep space, never to be heard from again...also check him out with Trane, on one of the Live at the Village Vanguard albums; talk about outer limits...
