I got the following letter today from a blast reader and correspondent. I am not sure what to do but it is troubling. I just killed the global map at the bottom of the page which is responsible for whosamongus. I will try to get out from the google + stuff as well as any other ballast I can jettison that might be weighting this puppy down. Since I am not a technical sort, any help you can give me is appreciated. I am not sure where all the cookies are coming from.

Your blog has become a real pain in the ass to try to read. Today I went there three times. (your email invitation is so inviting I just could not resist.)
It took 4 minutes to load the first time and did an automatic refresh.
The second time it took 3 minutes then did another automatic refresh and then took another 2 minutes to finally load.
The third time I paid attention to all the junk being loaded. Here is a partial list:

I have a very quick connection. No excuse there.
I typed 70% of this while it was loading the last time. Matter of fact it is still sitting on www.blueheronblast.com as I type right now. Meaning the browser will not scroll until it is done, making reading difficult at best.
Every one of the above wrote a cookie to my computer and then reported back to the source all related cookies on my system. (This is fairly normal these days and is part of the great web moneytization stampede.
So if you are going to give all these other folks the data ask for a piece of the action at least.
If you would prefer to remain above the commercial fray, I would recommend that you try to do without all of the bells and whistles unless all of your readers have the patience of Job or they just love your writing so very much that they would sit through multiple reruns of The Jerry Springer Show if need be.

I was just looking at the blast, as I do on a very regular basis.
I too WAS having trouble downloading it...before I got my new computer. It took forever and a day. Now, with the new computer it downloads without any problems at all...in maybe 10 or 15 seconds. Before it was 5 minutes or more. It was my computer, not your blog causing the delay. I wonder if that is not the case for the guy who is writing. A 'fast connection' does no good if your computer/hard drive or whatever is all clogged up/full.
Anyway, I think the problem may be his, not yours. Everything is working just fine for me. I hope you get a lot of people letting you know this.
I can sure understand why he might think it is you though. These computers are so complicated and irritating. They should just do what they're suppose to do and without delay !!

I have got rid of both the feedjit and the global hit map. I also ixnayed the social sharing buttons for Facebook and the like. Hope it helps. I could opt out of Google + completely but I worry that it will harm my gmail and blogger account so I am not going to move too rapidly.

"Cookied Out" was a perfect headline and W has an excellent point.
On a new computer or new Hard drive there are fewer cookies.
It is most certainly my computer as My cookie store is quite large.
That is why it takes so long for the LSO/flash cookies to search and then communicate with my hard drive and then the server/host drive to get instructions on what the site needs to write back to my hard drive after data gathering and modifying my profile or adding information.
That is the way these things work.
I could set my browser to not accept cookies and BHB might load much quicker indeed. I could set my browser to not accept cookies and BHB might load much quicker indeed. (It might not as the BHB site writes 10 cookies on it's own behalf that control how it is displayed on subsequent visits and a number of other little operational details/blanks/things that one can just let one's fertile imagination fill in.)
But then I would not have the benefits of Cookies and many sites would cease to function.
But I would also not be sending my data treasures back to the nameless gatherers for their consumption. The bright side I suppose.
Actually I just like to complain when I visit a web page and there are over 15 different sites writing cookies to my computer and then communicating with at least 20 databases each before sending back a modified cookie.
Really....1 or 2..............OK.

I don't think it's your blog. Your page loads within 2-4 seconds for me. Page load times can vary WILDLY due to variable of connection speed, computer and OS type, browser type and version, and yes, ads and external site connections. But I'm not seeing any problems with your site, so it's more likely the reader's computer.

Since I haven't had any difficulties with the site, I thought I'd reset my browser, delete all cookies, etc., to see how quickly it loaded.
On my Mac Pro tower with Safari and a direct ethernet connection, it loaded completely in between 2 to 3 seconds.
On my iPad (without resetting the browser) it loaded via WiFi in between 6 and 7 seconds. So no problems here!
I haven't noticed problems.
just a couple of seconds here... of course, I am only a few miles away.
