How about a hot summer hard rocker? I was listening to this the other day and thought that it was really an admirable effort. This is from Cactus debut album from 1969, the band being former members of the under rated Vanilla Fudge (bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmen Appice) as well as guitarists Rusty Day (Amboy Dukes) and singer Jim McCarty (Mitch Ryder.)
I think this thing smokes, almost jazzy in a way and shows off their considerable musicianship. Interesting that vocally the Parchman prisoner doesn't shoot his wife in this version, he merely pulls his knife...
