I think we should be proud to have the Californios like Pio Pico in our history. They were a pretty dignified and reasonably civilized bunch of people who could have created a unique nation. They got their pants pulled down by the giant gold rush immigration of US citizens but they and their culture never really disappeared.
I don't know how you get a state out of the US and live to tell the tale but if the US keeps getting more and more psychotic perhaps the Osos can be reborn.
